Voice of Lake County: Watch out for the little ones

Published: Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014 5:30 a.m. CDT

We are now into the “dog days of summer”, and it scares me to say that the opening of the school year is just around the corner. The weather is warm, and it beckons all of us to the outdoors to enjoy the fairs, festivals, music, picnics, amusement parks, driving with the windows down and the music blaring.

While you and I enjoy the summer, we tend to have it within us to account for our own personal safety. We cannot say that for all of the little ones – those “crumb-crunchers & ankle-biters” that may be within our presence at any given moment in time enjoying what summer has to offer.

All of us, and not just the parents, need to be aware of how excitable these little ones can become. They enjoy all the foods that summer fairs and festivals offer; running around heedlessly around lakes and rivers and streams or swimming pools at various locations; roaming free with their playmates and friends checking out interesting places and spots to roam.

I am asking all of us to be vigilant and diligent to protect our young ones from possible dangers. Please keep track of them as they attempt to wander away from your groupings. We want to keep them safe and not have them contend with strangers who are unfamiliar to them or getting into situations that may threaten their lives such as drownings or falling in places that are unsafe.

Please look out for their diets during this summer season as some of their choices may not be good for them. We want to keep them healthy and energized with vitality as they enjoy these warm months.

The kids are anxious to break free at every opportunity. Parents, you are their first protectors and benefactors for their well-being, but we can help too. With all of the fairs and festivals in our county, along with the musical concerts, the fireworks displays, the boat outings on the lakes and rivers, the picnics, the bike trails, the chances to swim, the great vacation trip, these provide many opportunities to have a relaxing and enjoyable summer. Let us make sure that our little ones enjoy it to the fullest as well.
