Saint Mary of Gostyn offers a wide array of extracurricular activities, as well as no-cut sports to its students. Athletic Director Mike Nolan and Jill Tierney, director of development and marketing, recently chatted about their offerings.

Question: Why is it so important to the school to offer no-cut sports? How do no-cut sports benefit students? Answer: No-cut sports at Saint Mary of Gostyn Catholic School offer all student-athletes the opportunity to compete and develop in the sport in which they love. It’s vital to Saint Mary’s in that the student-athletes are more well-rounded, part of a team and something bigger than themselves and it contributes directly to the overall health, spirit and vitality of the school community.

Question: What are some of the most popular extracurriculars among students? Answer: Students are able to participate in a number of different activities if they so desire. The Spring Musical is very popular and gains interest and participation of students across the board, those in athletics, academic clubs, religious activities, art, music, etc. Students in younger grades are well aware of this and look forward to the opportunity to participate.

Basketball is another activity that creates a lot of interest and buzz.

Question: Why is it so important to offer so many extracurricular choices? Answer: Children’s interests and skills vary so much. Middle school can be a challenging and confusing time for students. It is important that children have access to activities that give them confidence, make them happy and develop their talents. This builds confidence and a sense of belonging. There are a number of activities available to students in younger grades. These activities can impact academic achievement and affect classroom behavior, including enhanced concentration and attention.
