Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra (second from left) gets ready to cut the ribbon at Gelato D'Oro's grand opening July 31 in Addison. Mariella Meiarini Salvatori (center), a representative from the Italian Consul General in Chicago, also was present to congratulate the store's owners, Michael Meranda (second from right) and his wife, Mary (right).

ADDISON – When Gelato D'Oro owners Mary and Michael Meranda decided to open a storefront location after years of serving gelato on the go, they chose Addison partly because of its strong Italian culture.

"It is Italian ice cream," Mary Meranda said.

She explained that unlike American ice cream, which tends to be hard and condensed, gelato is much creamier and softer.

In addition, the husband and wife team's gelato is all natural and gluten free.

Gelato D'Oro recently celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting, but the company will continue to cater private parties and events as well as serve gelato seasonally from its food truck in Chicago.

In addition to the more than 100 flavors Gelato D'Oro serves, the gelato shop also can make custom flavors. In the past, the owners have created sangria sorbetto- as well as roses and champagne-flavored gelato.

While the couple live in Park Ridge, Mary Meranda said they have plenty of friends in Addison, and they are already involved in the community, working with Addison Trail High School and supporting the LTM Heroin Awareness and Support Foundation.

"We do a lot of fundraising," she said.
